The Prodigal Son
The story of the Prodigal Son (sometimes also called The Lost Son or The Two Sons) from Luke 15 is well known even outside of Christian circles. Because it's such an interesting story and so revealing of human nature and God's mercy, it's one of the most popular stories in the world!
Kids can remember (and tell about!) the Prodigal Son with this story wheel made from two paper plates. One of our little boys said, "I can't wait to show this to my family." He wanted to use it to tell them the story!
The bottom plate is decorated with six wedges that each tell part of the story, like pages in a book. The top plate has one wedge cut out and is connected to the bottom plate with a center brad. Kids love rotating the "window" plate around to reveal the next part of the story!
NOTE: Here are both templates with no words in case you want to write your own version or in your own language: Template 1 - NO WORDS, Template 2 - NO WORDS
To prepare:
Make center holes through 9" paper plates, two for each child. (Do two at a time so you get holes in the exact same place in each set of plates.)
Draw guidelines, on each top plate only, where the child will cut out the wedge to reveal the picture underneath.
Make copies of Template 1 and Template 2 on regular white copy paper.
At each place setting have:
2 9" paper plates
Center hole through both plates already pierced with awl or scissor blade
Cut lines for wedge shape drawn on each top plate
Wheel illustrations 1 and 2
Scissors
Glue stick
Crayons/markers on table
To assemble:
Color and cut out each half of the story wheel illustrations.
Glue these onto the bottom paper plate. Try not to cover up the center hole, but if you do, just punch another hole through the paper.
Cut out the wedge of the top plate, following the drawn guide line.
Connect the two plates with the brad. Voila!
