1 Samuel 16

"Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." --1 Samuel 16:7b
Did you ever notice that all throughout the Bible, God uses humble people? Moses was called the most humble man on earth (Numbers 12:3) and when God wanted a new king for Israel, he chose a young shepherd boy.
David's own father, Jesse, didn't even think to call David in with the rest of his brothers when he learned that God had chosen one of his sons to be the next king of Israel!
(Cute side note: We had taught our class that David's older brothers were tall and handsome but that God didn't care about that--He looks at someone's heart, not their looks. When reviewing our lesson later, one of the kids summed this up by saying, "God doesn't use handsome people." I'm glad that's not necessarily true, aren't you?)
You can make this shepherd-boy along with a sheep craft in About Sheep, Shepherds and Flocks and, if you want, put them on popsicle sticks to use as puppets.
PREPARE:
Make copies of the Shepherd Boy template on card stock.
Cut pipe cleaners in half (optional for staff).
MATERIALS NEEDED:
Shepherd boy/David character to cut out
Crayons or markers
Scissors
Pipe cleaner (optional) Popsicle sticks (optional)
Glue stick (if making popsicle stick puppet)
DIRECTIONS:
1. Color and cut out David.
2. OPTIONAL--You will have to do this for them. Make two holes for the pipe-cleaner shepherd's staff; one just above David's fist and one below it. You can use a scissor blade or a sharp pencil.
3. Stick the pipe cleaner into the top hole and back out the bottom hole. (You might have to help them with this part too!)
4. Make a crook with the pipe cleaner.
5. Glue David to a popsicle stick.
